The New England
Historical background:
Governor William Bradford led the pilgrims after John Calvin died a few months after they landed. The signed mayflower compact was the first self-government document in America. Miles Standish was their military expert and leader. Many of the colonist came from England to escape religious prosecution but believed in only their religion as the best and didn't tolerate other religions at all. Church life was very strict and it was a crime to not attend church.
Founders:
John Wheelwright was banished from England for defending his sister in law Anne Hutchinson. He founded New Hampshire. John Winthrop was the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony and founded Boston, Massachusetts. Thomas Hooker founded Hartford, Connecticut. Roger William left England for religious freedom, was a friend to the Indians and bought land from them and then founded Providence, Rhode Island. He thought people were equal and all religions should be tolerated.
Climate and Geography:
New England was much colder than the other regions and this did prevent the spread of many dangerous diseases. But the severe cold did kill a lot of of the people. The geography of New England was rocky and hilly which did prevent farming in many locations. Instead colonist in this area relied on Fishing, trapping and lumber instead of farming. There was more emphasis put put on commerce and trading of furs, fish and lumber than farming. Their natural resources were fish, timber, and whaling.
